University of Essex Men’s Basketball Center Anthony Jr. “TJ” Hibbert’s Parents Have Paid A Heartfelt Tribute To Their Beloved Son Following His Tragic Incident

The fatal death of Anthony Jr. “TJ” Hibbert, a 24-year-old University of Essex student and basketball player, has left his community in great shock.
On February 1, 2026, TJ was one of four people who died after their into a building in Magdalen Street, Colchester.
The accident took place at approximately 4:40 AM and also killed other students, Makyle Bayley (22), Eva Darold-Tchikaya (21), and Daljang Wol (22).
Emergency services arrived at the scene but unfortunately pronounced all four individuals dead.
Essex Police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a black Ford Focus in the area then.
TJ Hibbert’s parents and family said he was a young man who loved playing basketball and was incredibly kind.
They stated,
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of TJ, a young man whose passion for basketball was matched only by his kindness and uplifting spirit. He was loved by all, and his presence left a lasting warmth in the hearts of everyone he met.”

One of TJ’s seniors posted a photo and wrote,
I don’t even know what to say right now man so much pain…… Our two lil Brothers taken away in a heart beat. This so called life is so cruel…. TJ and DJ I love you boys mayn, my family forever. I can only say may your beautiful souls rest in peace💔

A GoFundMe Campaign Has Been Launched To Support The Victims’ Families
TJ played as a center for the Essex Rebels men’s basketball team and earned a reputation as an excellent player.
He contributed greatly to the team, and they respected him.
As a result of this tragedy, Mikolaj Sierpinski has set up a to support the families affected by this loss.
The aim is to reach a goal of £20,000, and it has already raised over £5,000.
Essex Police specialist officers are still supporting the families during this challenging time.
The passing of TJ Hibbert and his friends is a personal tragedy and a community loss.
Their lively lives were shortened, leaving behind a warm and friendly memory that everyone who knew them would hold dear.
