State police arrested Georgia offensive lineman Jahzare Jackson on July 16 on multiple drug-related charges that cast a shadow over his promising football career.

The Athens Banner-Herald that authorities took the sophomore into custody at 9:31 p.m. at the intersection of West Broad Street and Hawthorne Avenue in Athens.

Jackson faces serious legal challenges, including a felony charge for possession of marijuana exceeding one ounce, along with misdemeanor charges for possession of marijuana under one ounce and possession of drug-related objects.

Police discovered a marijuana grinder in Jackson’s 2017 Tesla during the arrest, which also resulted in an additional misdemeanor charge for holding a cell phone while driving.

Authorities booked Jackson into Clarke County Jail at 11:50 p.m. and released him on $5,030 bonds at 4:17 a.m. the following morning.

Georgia athletics responded to the incident with a brief statement, saying they were aware of the report but would provide no further comment.

Despite these legal troubles, Jackson had previously played in all 14 of Georgia’s games last season, making contributions on special teams and in reserve roles as a true freshman from San Diego, California.
