The Death of Coach Claydeen Allen Marks the Loss of a Beloved Educator and Community Pillar

Claydeen Allen, a cherished member of the Tupelo, Mississippi, community, passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 97.
Born on June 29, 1928, in Lowndes County, Mississippi, Claydeen devoted her life to family, faith, and service, leaving behind a legacy that touched countless lives.
A 1946 graduate of Caledonia High School, Claydeen pursued higher education at Mississippi University for Women, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1950.
She her career as a physical education teacher, first in McComb, Mississippi, from 1950 to 1952, and then at Amory City Schools, where she spent 28 impactful years inspiring students and athletes as a teacher and coach in basketball, tennis, and track.
Claydeen retired in 1988, leaving a lasting mark on the community through her dedication to education and sports.
Claydeen’s life was deeply rooted in family. She is survived by her son, Greg Allen (Cindy) of Tupelo, and her daughter, Debbie Allen-Boyd (Bill) of Newnan, Georgia.
She also leaves behind a large and loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Allen Doolittle, Laura Worden (Ryan), Lee Allen (Katy), Blake Allen (Amy), Matthew Fooshee (Jenna), Shelby Fooshee Smith (Casey), Cody Fooshee (Heather), Bailey Doolittle, Joybella Doolittle, Hyatt Doolittle, Emory Worden, Eve Worden, Tyler Allen, Anna Kate Allen, Ziggy Allen, Freddie Allen, Kayden Fooshee, Camdyn Smith, Chesnee Smith, Rylee Fooshee, and Brooks Fooshee.
Numerous nieces and nephews also remember her warmth and guidance fondly.
A woman of strong faith, Claydeen dedicated many years as a Sunday school teacher in the children’s department at First Baptist Church, where her kindness and devotion inspired both young and old.
She found joy in gardening, yard work, tennis, watching sports on television, and visiting nursing homes, always sharing her vibrant spirit with those around her.
Claydeen was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joe C. Allen, Jr.; her daughter, Cheryl Allen Doolittle; her great-grandson, Brady Joseph Fooshee; her parents, Erwyn and Ollie Freeman; and her siblings Jewell Brown, Earl Freeman, Addie Friedman, Hurd Freeman, Glover Freeman, Brad Freeman, Kelly Freeman, and Lloyd Freeman.
Visitation for Claydeen Allen will be held at First Baptist Church, Amory, Mississippi, on Friday, September 12, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 p.m., with Dr. Allen Simpson officiating.
A private family burial will take place at the Historical Society Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Amory First Baptist Church’s building fund.
Claydeen Allen’s dedication, warmth, and love leave a lasting legacy in her family, her students, and the community she served so faithfully.
Her life remains an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
