Alex Baumann, a Canadian swimming legend, has not only achieved remarkable success in his athletic career but also left an indelible mark on sports administration.

Born in Prague and raised in Canada, Baumann dominated the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, in the 200m and 400m individual medleys, setting world records in both.

His prowess continued at the in Edinburgh, where he won three gold medals, including anchoring Canada’s 4 × 100m medley relay team.

However, his competitive streak met a formidable challenge at the 1986 World Aquatics Championships in Madrid, where he earned a silver and bronze.

Baumann’s success was deeply tied to his bond with his coach, Dr. Jeno Tihanyi, who trained him for 14 years.

Their partnership extended beyond the pool when they co-authored Swimming with Alex Baumann: A Program for Competitive and Recreational Swimmers.

His triumphs were not just athletic feats but symbols of determination, overcoming injuries, and personal challenges to bring glory to Canada.

After retiring, Baumann transitioned into sports administration.

In December 2017, he was appointed Chief Strategist for High Performance at Swimming Australia.

Moreover, in April 2026, his responsibility evolved as the CEO of Swimming Australia.

Despite his efforts to shape Australia’s swimming success, he prioritizing his health and family.

Baumann met Tracy during the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.

After getting to know each other for 6 years, the couple finally tied the knot on April 30, 1988.

Together they have raised 2 children: Ashton Baumann and Tabitha Baumann, who interestingly followed their parents’ footsteps.

Tracy was the one to Tabitha to swim, which led to a fruitful result in the future.
