A true blue legend, Randy Poole, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2026, at the age of 69, after battling lung cancer for several months.
William Randall “Randy” Poole was a celebrated basketball figure in Southwest Virginia.
He was known for his impressive playing career and impactful coaching legacy.

William Randall “Randy” Poole was born on May 6, 1956, in Lebanon, Virginia, to Buddy and Shirley Poole.
He grew up in Grundy, Virginia, before moving to Castlewood at age nine. He married Kay, and together they raised their children, Traci and Adam.
His family was central to his life, and he found great joy in being a devoted grandfather to his seven grandchildren, Ashlyn, Jaci, Addison Poole, Tucker, Wyatt, Owen Lee, and Ava Claire Lee.
Moreover, his love for his family extended beyond his immediate household. He shared close bonds with his brothers, Mike and Johnny.
Regarding his career, Randy was a multi-sport athlete at Castlewood High School before attending King College (now King University).
During his college days, he became one of the most prolific basketball players in the school’s history.
Subsequent to his playing days, he transitioned into coaching, leading Castlewood High School’s basketball teams and later coaching at Patrick Henry High School.
His influence spanned over three decades, shaping young athletes and instilling discipline and heart in his teams.
Following his coaching career, Randy remained active in his community.
He dedicated himself to various roles, including teaching, painting, working in tobacco, and helping others with repairs and tasks.
His legacy was not just in sports but in his dedication to hard work, mentorship, and family.
A Great Shooter, Randy, Was Inducted Into The King University Athletics Hall Of Fame!
was inducted into the King University Athletics Hall of Fame for his outstanding basketball career.
He played 102 games at King University, scoring 1,799 points without the benefit of a three-point line.
Plus, Poole made his mark in single-game and single-season records. In 1974-75, he scored 38 points against Bluefield, ranking third all-time, and made 17 field goals in the same game, a school record.
He also hit 16 of 27 field goals against Tusculum that season, securing second and fourth place in those respective categories.
His shooting efficiency was remarkable, with an 86.6% field goal percentage against Bluefield in 1977, ranking fifth all-time for a single game.
In 1978, he posted 216 field goals, ranking fourth all-time for a single season, and 423 field goal attempts, placing sixth all-time.
His 77.8% career free-throw percentage ranked fifth in school history, highlighting his well-rounded offensive skillset.
His legacy at King University remains strong, with his career field goals record still standing.
