The Morrison County community is mourning after a tragic incident that left two individuals dead inside a Pierz home. Authorities have identified the deceased as John Gans, a well-known teacher and coach at Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School, and Crystal Marschel, a mother of one.
The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to an apartment in the 600 block of River Valley Road for a welfare check around 10:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered both John and Crystal deceased inside the residence.
Their bodies were transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.
According to the official report, Crystal Marschel died of a gunshot wound to the head, while John Gans’s cause of death has been ruled a suicide.
Authorities have confirmed that the case is being treated as an isolated domestic incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Crystal leaves behind a young daughter, and the heartbreak has rippled through the local community.
Outpouring Of Grief And Remembrance
Former students and family members have begun sharing tributes online, painting a picture of two lives that had a profound impact on those around them.
One former student of Mr. Gans wrote:
“Very unexpected and shocking. Wow… rest in peace Gans and Marschel. Wonderful teachers to me growing up. Very sad to see mental health take over someone’s life completely. I hope their minds are now silent and they are no longer suffering or feel alone. Your children and students will always remember you. Prayers to both families during this rough time. I pray for those little kids of theirs—that they can heal and recover from such a terrible tragedy at such a young age. Once again, mental health is important whether someone is internally or externally showing it or not. Please reach out to your friends, your family!! May John and Crystal rest in peace!!”
Via FacebookA heartbroken family member of Crystal Marschel added:
“Crystal Marschel, I am devastated today. The memory of running into you in Balsam Lake a few years ago just popped up in my memories on July 6th. I will never forget you running up to me screaming ‘Uncle John!’ and giving me a big hug. Domestic violence is NOT ok. I’ve known you since you were just a toddler, and today your loss is felt by way too many that cared about you. My heart goes out to your son, daughter, mom, dad, brother, and everyone else who is affected by this tragedy. I will always remember little ‘Crystal Lee Crystal Donahue.’ 💔 Godspeed and R.I.P to my niece.”
