The Southport and Oak Island communities are mourning the heartbreaking death of 11-year-old Luke Hanson, a bright, energetic boy whose life left a lasting impact on everyone around him.
Known for his infectious smile, love for baseball, and kind heart, Luke passed away after a sudden and devastating battle with meningitis.
Luke’s health took a tragic turn just days ago when what began as a simple ear infection escalated rapidly.
He was airlifted to Chapel Hill, where doctors diagnosed him with meningitis.
Despite the tireless efforts of medical teams and an outpouring of prayers from family, friends, and the wider community, Luke was declared clinically deceased at 11:35 AM (June 22).
He remained on life support so that his organs could be donated — a final, selfless gift that will give others the chance to live.
Those who knew Luke describe him as a boy full of determination, grace, and an undeniable zest for life.
His love for baseball was unmatched, with dreams of one day stepping onto a Major League field.
When he wasn’t on the diamond, Luke could be found fishing, singing along to his favorite country songs, or spending time with those he loved most — his older brother, Noah, his grandparents, Tim and Joy, and especially his mom, Emily.
Their bond was unbreakable, their love evident to everyone who saw them together.
While his passing has left a deep void, Luke’s legacy lives on through the lives he will save as an organ donor.
His “precious heart and other organs,” as his family shared, will bring hope to families who have been waiting for a miracle.
The community continues to rally around the Hanson family, with efforts underway to support them during this unimaginable time.
These funds will help cover medical and memorial expenses and give the family the space to grieve and honor Luke’s life.
