Undoubtedly, Shelli Bettman played a significant role in his life from his early stages of his career to his role as a prominent sports executive.

While Gary is widely recognized for his leadership in the National Hockey League, Shelli has built a meaningful career in social work and addiction counseling.

Shelli Bettman, born Michelle Weiner, is a highly educated and compassionate woman. She earned a master’s degree in social work and has worked as a licensed alcohol counselor.

Her career focuses on helping people struggling with addiction. Beyond her professional work, she has also focused on improving mental health treatment and addiction support systems.

Gary Bettman And Shelli Bettman Met At Cornell University!

Speaking about their relationship timeline, Gary and Shelli’s love story began in the 1970s at Cornell University, where they were both students.

They crossed paths for the very first time through mutual friends when Gary was a sophomore and Shelli was a freshman.

During their first meeting, Gary was 19, and Shelli was 17 when they started dating.

Gary has said that Shelli brings out the best in him, and they often joke that they “share a brain” because of how similar their thought processes are.

After years of courtship, Gary and Shelli took a strong step in their relationship. They walked down the aisle on August 24, 1975.

The married couple of 50 years share three children: Lauren, Jordan, and Brittany.

All three are grown, married, and have started their own families, giving Gary and Shellli 7 grandchildren.

The couple resides in New Jersey, near their children and grandchildren, and they also own a property in Boca Raton, Florida, which they purchased in 2026.

Gary Is Vocal About His Wife Shelli’s Role In His Life!

In fact, Shelli has been nothing but a constant in Gary’s life. She supports him at NHL events and helps keep their family grounded.

In a 2018 Sportsnet podcast interview on NHL Executive Suite, Gary spoke about meeting Shelli at Cornell University and her impact on his life and career. He said:

The most important thing I did at Cornell was actually meet who would be my wife… Shelli has always brought out the best in me even back then, so to me it was always clear.

He described her as “extraordinarily smart, extraordinarily supportive and loving.”

In an interview with City Lifestyle, Gary credited Shelli with teaching him to skate during their college years at Cornell, which indirectly supported his connection to hockey before his NHL career.

He stated,

When I was in college, my girlfriend, now wife Shelli taught me so that I could play intramural hockey
