DeSoto, Texas Native and University of Memphis Football Standout Yakiri Walker Carries on Father Dennis Walker’s Sports Legacy, Following in His Footsteps on and off the Field

Yakiri Walker, the 6-foot-2 offensive lineman and redshirt senior for the University of Memphis, is steadily gaining attention for his impressive performance on the football field.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and a standout at DeSoto High School, Walker has built a reputation as a disciplined and dedicated athlete, following a path paved by his father, Dennis Walker.
From his early days playing under head coach Claude Mathis at DeSoto High School, Yakiri consistently demonstrated skill and leadership.
He earned First Team All-District honors in 2019 and 2026 and was recognized on the All-State Academic team in 2026.
His athleticism extended beyond football, as he also achieved First Team All-District recognition in baseball.
Yakiri’s college has taken him across the country. He began at the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Storrs, Connecticut, where he played 17 games over two seasons and earned impressive pass and run blocking grades.
He then transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, where he appeared in games for the Buffaloes before continuing his career at the University of Memphis in Tennessee, where he now plays as a key part of the Tigers’ offensive line.
Furthermore, off the field, Yakiri’s family has been a cornerstone of his success.
Born to Dennis Walker and Laneya Pruitt, he shares a close bond with his siblings, Kaiden and Keosha.
His parents have been a constant source of support, attending games, offering guidance, and celebrating his accomplishments.
Yakiri often shares pictures of his family on social media, expressing his love, pride, and gratitude.
He never misses an opportunity to acknowledge their influence, crediting them for his determination and character.

Yakiri Walker’s Father Dennis Walker, is the Head Football and Girls Softball Coach at DeSoto High School
Yakiri Walker’s father, , has been serving as a beloved coach for the DeSoto ISD Football team for over 20 years and brings a total of over 23 years of coaching experience to the field.
He was part of the historic 2016-17 DeSoto football team under Coach Todd Peterman that went undefeated (16-0) and earned the school’s first-ever state championship.
Currently, serves as the Head Coach for the Freshman Football team and as an Assistant Special Teams Coach for the Varsity team under Coach Mathis at DeSoto High School.
Under his leadership, the Freshman team went undefeated with an academic passing rate of 97 percent during the 2026 and 2026 seasons.
Additionally, Coach Dennis Walker is also the Head Coach of the Lady Eagles Softball Team.
Recently, in early 2026, he led the team to a historic win at the Fort Worth Dunbar softball tournament-the first time in program history the Lady Eagles secured the title.
Before joining DeSoto, Dennis worked under coach Frank Gendusa, serving as Running Backs Coach, Defensive Backs Coach, and Special Teams Coach.
In 2007, he was hired as Athletic Coordinator at East Junior High School.
Dennis played college football at McMurry University, where he was a standout running back and three-year letterman.
He was a member of the 1993 Aztec Bowl team and earned First Team All-American honors. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from McMurry and his Master of Education in Teacher Leadership from Walden University in December 2019.
Dennis Walker also served as the first coach to his son Yakiri Walker insitlling in him the love and passion for sports from a very young age.
