Beth Phoenix was born Elizabeth Kociański to Polish parents on November 24, 1980, in Elmira, New York.
In a , Beth revealed that when she was eleven years old, she won a coloring contest and was awarded prize tickets to a television taping for the WWF, to which she credits her love for wrestling.
Her favorite wrestlers growing up were Bret Hart, Sgt. Slaughter, Owen Hart, and Ted DiBiase.
She attended Notre Dame High School in Elmira, where she played tennis, ran track, and, of course, wrestled.
She became the first-ever varsity wrestler in her school’s history and also won the North-East freestyle women’s championship in 1999.

Beth attended Canisius College in New York and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and public relations.
After training at various independent circuits, she made her first significant breakthrough by joining Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), WWE’s developmental territory at the time.
