Former Temple University Athlete Bill Mahoney’s Family Grieves His Passing At The Age Of 68!

Bill Mahoney, a beloved athlete in Temple University Athletics’ sports history, passed away on May 27, 2026, at the age of 68.
Temple University Athletics announced the passing of Bill Mahoney, a 2016 inductee into the Temple University Athletics Hall of Fame.
The tragic news of his death prompted an outpouring across social media. Temple University Cross Country/Track & Field wrote:

Mahoney was the first ever All-American in Temple men’s cross country history. Mahoney was inducted into the Temple University athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Mahoney made history as the first-ever All-American in Temple men’s cross country. He left a significant mark on the Owls’ track and cross country programs during the mid-1960s.
Born in Cornwells Heights, Pennsylvania, Bill Mahoney emerged as a standout athlete at Bensalem High School before bringing his talents to Temple University.
Mahoney was an outstanding distance runner for the Owls. He won the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) cross country championship four times, proving he was one of the best in the sport.
His crowning achievement came at the NCAA College Division Championship, where he placed fifth, earning All-America honors and becoming the first Temple men’s cross country athlete to achieve this distinction.
Not to forget, was just as impressive on the track as he was in cross country. He claimed the MAC two-mile title three times indoors and twice outdoors.
His third-place finish in the 1966 NCAA College Division Championship three-mile race further proved his legacy as one of Temple’s top distance runners.
As a team captain for both cross country and track, Mahoney played a crucial role in leading the Owls to their first MAC Outdoor Track title.
Eventually, Temple Athletics recognized Mahoney’s contributions by inducting him into the Hall of Fame in 2016, honoring him as “arguably the top distance runner in school history.
