Former Butte Central Football Coach And Hall of Famer Rick Sparks Passes Away At 77, Leaving His Wife Kathy Heartbroken

Rick Sparks, a revered figure in Montana high school football, passed away just days before his 78th birthday on July 1, 2026.

As of now, the specific cause of Rick Sparks’ passing has not been publicly disclosed in available sources.

Butte Sports World And Beyond Are Mourning Rick Sparks’ Loss!

Known affectionately as “Sparky,” he left a lasting legacy both as a player and a coach.

As a player, was the All-State center for Butte High’s undefeated 1964 state championship team.

He later played college ball with the Montana Grizzlies. Then, he went on to coach at Butte Central, serving as offensive coordinator during the legendary 1981 city-title football game.

Beyond football, Sparky led Butte Central to five state championships across track and wrestling, four in track (three girls’ titles and one boys’) and one in wrestling.

In 1982, he made history when both the boys’ and girls’ track teams won state in the same meet.

For his accomplishments, he was inducted into the in 2009, both individually and as part of the 1964 team.

He was known not only for his coaching skills but also for his humor, personality, and deep love for the Butte community.

Moreover, he was also a poet; his piece “,” written during his senior year, is still celebrated by the Butte High Silver B’s community

Following his passing, many in the Butte sports world and beyond are mourning Sparky’s loss.

Former players, students, and fellow coaches have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering him as a passionate leader, a mentor, and a joyful presence.

Podcaster , host of , shared that one of his favorite episodes was the one where Rick “Sparky” Sparks joined him as a guest, saying:

Sparky was a guest on the podcast in January of 2026. It is probably my favorite episode. He messages me a couple days after we recorded it and wanted to make a second appearance because he had so many more stories to tell. We planned on part 2, but we never got to it.

Yes, the world is a lesser place today, but we are all better because Sparky was here. Rest easy, Old Hippy. You’re already missed.

Likewise, one of his former students paid tribute to him, saying that Sparky was his best teacher and further added:

With deep sorrow, we bid farewell to Rick Sparks, the unforgettable Sparky! He was my favorite teacher, swapping tests for donuts in class. A proud Griz football player, he enriched my life with wisdom and kindness. I’ll always remember back-talking in high school, earning me the task of cleaning his messy Butte apartment, several times. His dislike for sassy teens often got me in trouble, yet we forged a great friendship. He impressed us all with amazing Griz tailgate meals. It’s our time to give back. Please help his beloved wife Kathy and family with a contribution to his funeral expenses. Every bit counts.

Moreover, a fundraising campaign was launched to support his family and help with funeral expenses.

Organized by Denise Reely on behalf of Kathleen Dennis‑Sparks, the GoFundMe titled “” invited those whose lives Sparky touched to contribute.

According to the fundraiser’s description, Rick’s former students and friends recalled memories of his generosity.

The campaign has already received numerous donations, all aimed at easing the burden on his wife, Kathy, during this difficult time.

Although he passed away, his legacy lives on through the countless students he inspired and the athletes he coached.
