Former Brewer High School Softball Player Carol Anne Goodale Dies at 78 After Battling Cancer!

Carol Anne Goodale, aged 78, passed away on February 9, 2026, at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick after an eight-month battle with cancer.

Carol Anne Goodale was born as one of four kids of her parents, Vernon Ellis Gilleland and Lena Denise Paiement. She had three siblings: brothers Michael Gilleland, Mark Gilleland, and sister Paula Gray.

Born on December 20, 1946, in Los Angeles, California, her family relocated to Brewer in 1952.

She attended Brewer High School, where she excelled in athletics and was voted “Most Athletic” by her peers.

During high school, Carol was an accomplished softball player and competed in track and field.

Carol and her sister, Paula, share many adventures and a love for women’s basketball. Both avid women’s basketball fans would watch the games and cheer loudly for their favorite teams.

According to the , a private memorial service will be held for family and close friends later this spring. Meanwhile, we offer our heartfelt condolence to her husband, kids, and the extended Goodale family.

Carol Anne Goodale Is Survived by Dean A. Goodale, Her Husband of 58 Years and Four Children!

The former athlete Carol succumbed to cancer, leaving behind her husband, 4 kids, 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Carol Annge Goodale married the love of her life, Dean A. Goodale, in 1966. Together, the couple built a sound married life filled with nothing but love.

The couple celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary and had each other’s back until Carol took her last breath.

Carol and Dean shared four children, making a tight-knit family of six members. They had three daughters, Michelle Garza, Karen Smith, and Heidi Lathrop, and a son, Dean W. Goodale.

All four of their children are married. Their daughter Michelle Garza married Isaac Garza, and their daughter Karen Smith married Michael Smith.

Their third daughter, Heidi, married Lloyd Lathrop IIIand the couple had two sons, Lloyd Lathrop IV and Luke.

Whereas, Carol and Dean’s son, Dean W. Goodale, married Kelley Goodale.

After raising their children in various New England states, the Goodale family eventually settled in Cumberland Foreside.

With her skills in knitting and crocheting, Carol worked at a yarn shop after their children had grown. Likewise, she worked as a bank teller before deciding to get her Certified Nurse’s Assistant.

She took great pride in her work at Brentwood Rehabilitation Center in Yarmouth, Maine, where she cared for residents, including her grandmother.

Later, Carol and Dean moved to South Berwick briefly before building their dream log cabin home in Pownal.

In addition to crocheting and knitting, Carol had a passion for several crafts, including basket weaving, painting, sewing, and cooking, which she shared with her family and taught in local classes.

As an outstanding athlete, Carol encouraged all the children to play a sport or dance. She and her husband, Dean, without fail, attended all their sporting events.

Above all, Carol was a loving human being who would make everyone feel at home.

She was an exceptional grandmother and aunt. Carol was deeply involved in her grandchildren’s and nieces’ and nephews’ lives, encouraging them in sports, dance, and school activities.
