Rick Heier was more than just a teacher and coach at Fallston High School

For over three decades, he poured his heart into shaping young minds, both in the classroom and on the field.

His ability to connect with students went beyond academics or athletics; he had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen and valued.

Whether he was teaching a lesson, coaching a game, or sharing one of his legendary stories, Rick brought energy and enthusiasm to everything he did.

His passions extended beyond the school walls. Rick loved sports, photography, and traveling, interests that he often shared with his students and family.

His knack for storytelling was unmatched, with former students recalling his humorous anecdotes and life lessons that stuck with them long after graduation.

His quotable remarks, such as the playful “finger lick to thumbs up” or the dramatic pencil toss, became part of the Fallston High School experience, making his classes memorable and enjoyable.

Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Heier, and their three children, Christopher, Kelly, and Kendyll, as well as his cherished grandchildren and many loved ones.

His family was his pride and joy, and he was a constant source of support and encouragement for them.

His daughter, Kelly Allyson, shared an emotional tribute that captured the depth of his influence:

“Dad, It’s hard to put into words how much I will miss you. I will forever remember the love, kindness, laughter, and joy that you spread throughout your life, and it will always be with me. I am grateful for every moment we shared and for the person you helped me become. Even though you’re no longer here, your influence is everywhere—in the people you helped, the lessons you taught, and the kindness you inspired. Fallston lost a true legend today, and I’m so proud of the life you lived and the impact you made. Your love and examples you set will guide me forever. I lost an amazing father, and Fallston lost a true legend today. Love you always, Dad.”

Rick’s compassion wasn’t reserved for his family alone.

He had a unique ability to connect with students and colleagues, offering guidance and support during their most challenging moments.

His impact was especially evident in the way he supported students through personal struggles, always approaching them with empathy and understanding.

Former Students and Colleagues are Sharing Many Stories about the Strong Impact Rick had on their Lives

Pat Parrish, a former student, shared a heartfelt story about how Rick supported him during a difficult time:

“I had my first child with my wife when I was a student in his class my junior year. Once the entire school had heard, he pulled me to the side and said, ‘Listen buddy, it’s time to become a man.’ He gave me countless other examples of wisdom that I have used about being a father since that day and continue to pass on to others over 17 years later. While other teachers looked down upon a high school pregnancy, Mr. Heier stood by me and asked every single day how I was doing, how my wife was, and how the baby was coming along. He always brought such positive energy into every room he walked into. By far one of the best storytellers I’ve ever come across.”

Another former student, Andrew Undem, recalled Rick’s positivity and memorable teaching style:

“I had Mr. Heier my first three years at Fallston High. Freshman year 2001/2002, the year he came back I believe, I had him for Foundations of Technology, then Accounting 1, then Accounting 2. Great memories. The finger lick to thumbs up. The pencil toss. He was always happy and fun to be around. Everyone loved him. He was a great teacher and a great guy.”

Robert Gould, a colleague, also shared how Rick’s wit and optimism left a lasting impression:

“Rick made an impression on me with his wit and positive attitude. It meant a lot to a young teacher just trying to navigate. His impact on students and the community is going to last. I hope you all take care of yourselves. These are some of the most difficult times in life.”
