Nicholas “Nick” Williams was one of three E.E. Smith High School football players tragically killed in a car accident on Wednesday evening, October 8, 2026, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
On the evening of Wednesday, October 8, 2026, a devastating car accident claimed the lives of three E.E. Smith High School football players in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Around 7:22 p.m., a 2026 Honda Civic carrying four teens veered off Rosehill Road, struck a telephone pole, mounted the sidewalk, and collided with a tree.
The crash killed 17-year-old Nicholas “Nick” Williams, 18-year-old Jai-Hyon Elliot, and 17-year-old Trevor Merritt.
They are all beloved members of the Golden Bulls football team.
A fourth passenger, Dymond Monroe, 21, survived but was airlifted to UNC Hospital with serious injuries.
As per the police, the crash remains under investigation by the Traffic Department.
Nick Williams Was A Multi-Sport Athlete And A Beloved Senior At E.E. Smith High School!
was a proud member of the Golden Bulls football team.
He was a senior at E.E. Smith High School, Class of 2026, and a talented multi-sport athlete who played football, baseball, and basketball.
On the varsity football team, he wore jersey #4 and was ranked in the top 32 in Eastern Sandhills 5A/6A for one stat.
He had recently played in two varsity football games during the 2026 season. During that time, he recorded a 6-yard rush and attempted three passes.
In baseball, he played as an infielder, utility player, and right-handed pitcher, wearing jersey #2.
He earned top rankings: top 18 in Division 3A East and top 4 in All-American 3A/4A for one stat.
Additionally, he played forward on the junior varsity basketball team, wearing jersey #24.
Nick was known for his athletic versatility, leadership, and dedication across all three sports.
His role extended beyond athletics; he was considered an irreplaceable part of the E.E. Smith family.
Nick’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family and the E.E. Smith High School community.
Superintendent Dr. Eric C. Bracy of Cumberland County Schools expressed his sadness over the passing of three young souls, saying:
These three young men left a lasting impact on everyone they encountered. Cumberland County Schools will walk alongside their families, classmates, teachers, and staff in the days ahead. We are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals who acted with care during the tragic evening. Let us hold space for grief, unity, and healing. No one should go through this heartbreak alone.
