Virginia native and respected basketball referee DJ Barton was recently physically attacked at a youth basketball tournament.
On Saturday, July 26, 2026, while officiating a youth basketball tournament, DJ Barton was physically attacked by one of the coaches.
DJ Barton took to his official to release a statement about his physical attack incident and the inhuman behaviour of the coach.
Barton further stated that while he was in the process of reporting the two technical fouls the coach had received for aggressive behavior, the coach blindsided him, knocking him to the ground.
Furthermore, Barton revealed that he was thrown into the air, landed hard on his side, and struck his head on the floor, causing him to lose consciousness for a period of time.
DJ Barton was immediately taken to the nearby hospital, and he revealed that the coach was arrested for his inhuman behaviour.
After the tragic incident, Barton expressed his sorrow and highlighted how officials are often cursed at, threatened, and even assaulted—yet organizations and leagues continue to ignore it.
He stated that the coach should never be allowed near a youth athlete again.
“And let me be clear: he should never be allowed near a youth athlete again. EVER!
We keep asking why there’s a shortage of officials. This is why . We keep saying, “It’s just a game.”But the behavior from adults is anything but. Officials are being cursed at, threatened, followed to their seats, and now, physically assaulted. And still, many leagues, tournaments, and organizations turn a blind eye until it’s too late .This has to stop.”
He concluded his statement by saying:
“We need more than apologies and statements. We need enforceable standards, lifetime bans, accountability, and real consequences for coaches, parents, or anyone who crosses the line. We owe that to every official, every player, and every kid watching from the stands learning what “sportsmanship” is supposed to mean.
I’m sharing this not just because I’m in pain and processing the whole thing, but because this needs to be seen. This is the reality of what many officials deal with, and it’s unacceptable.”
