Bo Bassett, one of the most promising young wrestlers in America, is a product of a family rooted in love, sacrifice, and support.

At just 19 years old, Bo has already earned accolades on the world stage, including gold at the 2026 Cadet World Freestyle Championships and a bronze at the U20 World Championships.

But behind those medals is a powerhouse team: his parents, Bill and Karissa Bassett, for whom wrestling isn’t just a sport.

For them, it’s a family lifestyle, passed down through generations, including Bo’s grandfather, “Wild” Bill Bassett.

Bo Bassett’s Mother Is His Biggest Cheerleader

Karissa Bassett, the proud wrestling mom, is a dedicated registered nurse who works in the breast cancer unit at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

Balancing a demanding healthcare career with supporting an elite athlete isn’t easy, but Karissa has managed both with grace and passion.

From cheering in the stands to traveling across continents, she’s always there for Bo, literally and emotionally.

When Bo dominated his weight class at the 2026 Cadet World Championships in Hungary, Karissa was in the crowd, living every moment with him.

She recalled,

He said, ‘I love it, Mom. I love the battle.’ I said, ‘I’m glad you love it because it’s really hard on me! Thank God it’s over.’

But for Karissa, Bo’s victories are also family bonds.

Her younger sons, Keegan and Melvin Miller, have been deeply inspired by their brother’s achievements, and Karissa takes more pride in that connection than any podium finish.

She said,

“That’s more important than accomplishments to know we raised boys that love each other so much.”

Bo Bassett’s Father Is Also His First Coach

Bo Bassett was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and raised in a home that valued hard work, education, and family.

His father, Bill, who is his mentor and coach, worked for 12 years in the local public school system.

Bill recognized Bo’s talent early and dedicated himself to providing opportunities for his son to grow, both on the mat and in the classroom.

Wrestling and academics go hand-in-hand in the Bassett household.

When public school didn’t challenge Bo, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bill helped him transition to Bishop McCort Catholic High School.

Bill explained,

“The public school system wasn’t pushing him hard enough. At Bishop McCort, Bo found a place that fueled both his academic and athletic potential.”

Thanks to scholarships and financial aid, Bo was able to attend the school that would set the stage for his elite-level journey.

Bo said,

“My parents believe in me 100%. They’re the only people who are there always. That’s everything.”

Bo Bassett Decommits From Iowa

In early 2026, Bo made headlines when he decommitted from the University of Iowa, despite being one of the top-ranked recruits in the 2026 class.

Just months earlier, he had been the center of attention at a FloWrestling Night in America event in Iowa, with fans lining up to meet him and his merchandise flying off the shelves.

But in a surprising social media post, Bo explained his decision:

“After a lot of prayer and talking with my family, I’ve decided to decommit from the University of Iowa… This is about finding the place God wants me to be.”
