Arkansas Icon Harold Horton Passes Away After 63 Years of Marriage to Wife Betty Eldridge

Coach Harold Horton has died, but his wife, Betty Eldridge Horton, remains the living Memory of their journey.

Harold Horton (c. 1939 – May 3, 2026) established himself as a legendary figure in Arkansas football history through his remarkable career as both player and coach.

Born in DeWitt, Arkansas, Horton first gained recognition as an all-state high school player before joining the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

Under coach Frank Broyles, he contributed to three consecutive Southwest Conference championships from 1959 to 1961, including a victory in the 1960 Gator Bowl.

After graduating in 1962, Horton launched his coaching career at the high school level, compiling an impressive 43-15-3 record at Bald Knob and Forrest City.

His success caught the attention of his former mentor, and Broyles brought him back to Arkansas as linebackers coach in 1968.

Horton served 13 years as an assistant coach under both Broyles and Lou Holtz before taking the head coaching position at the University of Central Arkansas in 1982.

At UCA, Horton’s coaching brilliance truly shone. He led the Bears to an astounding 74-12-5 record, capturing back-to-back NAIA Division I National Championships in 1984 and 1985.

His teams dominated the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference with seven straight championships from 1983 to 1989, including three undefeated 10-0 seasons.

Before leaving UCA, his teams achieved an incredible 38 consecutive victories.

Horton returned to his alma mater in 1990 as an athletics administrator, later serving as Executive Director of the Razorback Foundation from 2008 until his retirement in 2012.

His contributions earned him induction into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor, and the University of Central Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Horton’s Death Leaves Wife Betty Holding Their Story

While Harold Horton commanded respect on the football field, his wife, Betty Eldridge Horton, stood steadfastly by his side throughout his illustrious career.

A fellow DeWitt High School , Betty married Harold on June 3, 1960, beginning a remarkable partnership that would span over six decades of love, family, and football.

Betty and Harold’s marriage endured through the many transitions of his career—from his early coaching days at small Arkansas high schools to his triumphant tenure at UCA and his administrative roles with the Razorbacks.

Throughout these changes, Betty maintained their home in Fayetteville, Arkansas, creating stability for their growing family.

The couple raised two children, Holly Banister and Tim Horton, who followed in his father’s footsteps as a Razorback player and later became a coach at the Air Force Academy.

Betty took great pride in their expanding family, which grew to include five grandchildren—Bentley, Charlotte, Caroline, Barrett, and Jackson—and three great-grandchildren—Wynn, Banks, and Jack.

Betty frequently shared her pride in Harold’s accomplishments and their family milestones through social media.

On their 61st wedding anniversary in 2026, she wrote,

Six years earlier, celebrating their 55th anniversary, she about their long journey together, noting they had just completed an 11-hour drive from Auburn, Alabama, back to Arkansas—demonstrating the couple’s continued vitality and companionship even after decades together.

Betty accompanied Harold to numerous recognition events, proudly standing by as he received the Distinguished Service Award at the Hall of Honor Banquet in 2012.

She documented these moments, to themselves affectionately as “Coach and MeMe” in photos from Naples, Florida, and various Arkansas locations.

Through the victories and challenges of Harold’s high-profile career, Betty provided unwavering support while establishing her own identity as a beloved family matriarch.

After 63 years of marriage, Betty now carries forward their shared memories following Harold’s passing.
