Despite a record-breaking season for the New York Liberty, controversy arises when Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve claims that the championship win was stolen from them.

Hailing from Walnut Creek, California,  is an American professional basketball player for the New York Liberty of the WNBA.

What Prompted The Hate Towards The New York Liberty And Sabrina Ionescu?

The recent 2026 WNBA Finals became a fruitful season for the New York Liberty as they have had significant wins this season.

Sabrina has been a huge asset for the Liberty as she is among the finest players in the team. She completed the WNBA finals with 5 points on 1-19 field shooting which also includes 1-10 from three-point range.

Even though she added 8 assists and 7 rebounds, Ionescu could not get a shot to call all game long.

Therefore, her recent performances have garnered a lot of criticism, and some have accused her of cheating in the WNBA finals.

The hate that she has been receiving is quite evident, as many basketball fans have taken upon their social media to criticize and spew hate comments at her.

Sabrina Ionescu is a fraud

I love Breanna Stewart & Sabrina Ionescu, but that was not a performance worthy of a WNBA title. Felt like refs were gonna keep giving Stewie free throws until they went in. A truly abysmal shooting night for both players. Bad reffing tarnished their legacy IMO. Clear favoritism.

Moreover, ESPN’s Women’s basketball reporter Alexa Philippou also commented on Ionescu’s weak performance.

The Liberty’s win and Sabrina’s alleged cheating scandal have undoubtedly made the 2026 WNBA Finals the most impactful and attention-grabbing season in the league’s history.

Despite all the controversies and name-calling, the Lynx and New York Liberty showcased their ultimate prowess in the WNBA finals.

The Faulty Refereeing During The Match Can Be The Reason Behind The Lynx’s Severe Defeat!

The refereeing was quite inconsistent and seemed to favor the Liberty. While the Liberty received more favorable calls, the referee gave the Lynx questionable fouls that severely impacted their game.

The foul distribution reflected a glaring 19-12 disparity against them. This infuriating incident prompted the Lynx coach, Reeve, to claim that the game was stolen from them.

“It’s a shame that officiating played such a significant role in a series of this magnitude. There are always teams who end up feeling more devastated than others. Today was profoundly disappointing for us. This isn’t rocket science. Officiating need not be this complicated.”

In her postgame press conference, Reeve said,

“I know all the headlines will be ‘Reeve Cries Foul.’ Bring it on. Right? Bring it on. Because this s— was stolen from us. Bring it on.”

However, one has to realize that it was more of the referee’s fault than the players at the match.

The players set high standards, but the referees’ performances fell short, impacting the integrity of the league.

According to many NBA stars, the referees cheated on Liberty at the end of the WNBA finals.

and  insinuated that referees deliberately allowed Liberty to stage a comeback in the second half.

I’m sorry but that wasn’t a foul! Let the damn players dictate the outcome of a close battled tested game. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Refs called this game like they knew the assignment in the 2nd half boy. Great game .

— Damian Lillard (@Dame_Lillard)

There is no doubt that different referees tolerate different levels of contact. However, the refereeing inconsistencies witnessed in the Finals have significantly tarnished the league’s image.

The Liberty coach, Sandy Brondello, avoided Reese’s outcry and emphasized her team’s resilience.

While the team and Ionescu have received significant hate, they have not let the hate stop them from celebrating their victory.

There are manys fans who have shown their utmost support for the Ionescu and the team. The Liberty fans have been defending Ionescu and the team from unsolicited hate.
