The Fall and Reinvention of Kayle Leogrande: Doping, Suspensions, and a New Life in Ink

After facing an eight-year suspension from cycling, Kayle Leogrande seems to have shifted his entire focus to his tattoo business.

Kayle Leogrande was born on March 29, 1977, in Grand Terrace, California. Leogrande had an outstanding cycling career and was known for his flashy, muscular, tattoo-artist persona. However, his doping scandal completely derailed his promising career and tainted his reputation.

Most cyclists feel trapped in a vicious cycle where they become physically weak, mentally drained, or socially pressured. The culture of cycling itself has a deep history of doping, where sometimes it is even organized or quietly accepted by teams. Therefore, doping appears to be a means of restoring strength or maintaining competitiveness.

One striking example is Kayle Leogrande, whose promising cycling career was derailed after he was caught doping twice and handed lengthy suspensions. Leogrande,  the 2006 winner of the United States National Criterium Championships, was first embroiled in a doping scandal in 2008.

The scandal and subsequent investigation began when he allegedly confessed to a team staffer, Suzanne Sonye, that he was using performance-enhancing drugs when competing at Superweek on July 26, 2007.

Although Leogrande opposed the charges brought against him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), he received a two-year suspension from the sport of cycling. This decision was made by a three-member arbitration panel, which concluded that he had used EPO.

Even though Leogrande’s lab tests were negative, USADA built a case using testimony, documents, and circumstantial evidence. This approach made his case unusually groundbreaking.

Besides Suzanne Sonye, there was another witness, Joseph Papp, who testified that he had sold EPO to Leogrande.

Furthermore, the head of USADA, Travis Tygart, revealed that USADA might never have been able to go after another cyclist, Lance Armstrong, without Leogrande’s non-analytical positive case. .

Lance Armstrong was a master at passing drug tests and never officially tested positive for doping. However, this legal strategy resulted in Armstrong facing a lifetime ban in 2012.

After serving his two-year ban, Leogrande returned to racing in 2011. He went on to win the US Masters Criterium Championships in 2015 and 2016.

However, the USADA again suspended Leogrande for a further 8 years after he tested positive for seven substances: anti-estrogen drug raloxifene, four Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (ostarine, RAD140, LGD4033, and andarine), ibutamoren (a growth hormone-like factor), and GW1516 sulfone.

This investigation was conducted following his win at the Dana Point Grand Prix.

“Raloxifene and GW1516 sulfone, a metabolite of GW1516, are prohibited substances in the class of Hormone and Metabolic Modulators; ostarine, RAD140, LGD4033 and andarine, are prohibited substances in the class of Anabolic Agents; and ibutamoren is a prohibited substance in the class of Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances and Mimetics. These substances are prohibited at all times under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing, the United States Olympic Committee National Anti-Doping Policies, and the International Cycling Union Anti-Doping Rules, all of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.”

Leogrande’s eight-year suspension is set to end in 2026. However, there has been no recent update on Leogrande’s comeback in cycling. These days, Leogrande has channeled his focus into his tattoo ventures and cultivated a reputation as a skilled artist in Southern California.

Since 2005, he has owned several tattoo establishments in the region, under the name Ötzi Tattoo Company. Moreover, he proudly flaunts being a passionate tattoo artist, husband, father, and athlete.

After reviewing his Instagram, we discovered that Leogrande primarily creates traditional Japanese-style tattoos (Irezumi) by blending bold imagery, mythology, and nature with flowing,full-body compositions.

Additionally, he is a devoted family man who enjoys spending time with his family and cycling with his children.
