The Dutch professional was born on 25 April 1989 in Boxtel, Netherlands, to his parents, Henri van Gerwen and Wilma van Germen.

He grew up with three siblings. During his childhood, he was interested in soccer and used to play as a defender until he was 12.

Michael began playing darts at 13 and reached the final of the Primus Masters Youth event at 14.
