Tuomas Iisalo, a Finnish professional interim basketball head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, is married and has three children. Due to his coaching duties, his family travels around Europe with him.
After growing up in Loviisa, he played in a youth team of the local club Hokki Basket. He joined Kouvot in 2000 and represented Korisliiga clubs Espoon Honka and Torpan Pojat.
Similarly, he played for various Finnish youth national teams and won the Finnish Cup in 2009. He played 58 games with the Finnish senior national team and retired after the 2013-14 season.
Afterward, Tuomas was appointed as head coach of Tapiolan Honka and was an assistant with Finland U15. He moved to Germany and signed with Crailsheim Merlins in the Basketball Bundesliga in March 2016.
In May 2026, he signed a two-year contract with Telekom Baskets Bonn and was named the Bundesliga Coach of the Year in the 2026 and 2026 campaigns.
After winning the FIBA Champions League in May 2026, he was honored with the Basketball Champions League Best Coach. However, he left the club at the end of the 2026–23 season and joined Paris Basketball in June 2026.
The Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA named him as assistant coach on July 8, 2026, making him the first Finnish-born coach in the NBA. After firing Taylor Jenkins, he was promoted to interim head coach on March 28, 2026.
You can dream about things. But it was never something that I thought was going to lead to something like this.
Tuomas Iisalo’s Wife Is The Backbone Of The Family
Tuomas Iisalo steps into the spotlight as the interim head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, but behind his success stands an equally remarkable figure: his wife.
His wife is a dedicated doctor and the backbone of their family. They face the challenges of careers in high-pressure fields together while raising three children.

Tuomas has built a reputation as a sharp basketball mind, and his wife has pursued her demanding medical career.
Her role is crucial, even though she maintains a private lifestyle. She balanced the unpredictable schedule of a professional basketball coach with her responsibilities as a physician.
Her profession requires long hours, critical decision-making, and emotional resilience, qualities that mirror those needed in coaching.
The married couple’s mutual understanding of high stakes has likely been key to managing their busy lives. The coach’s family often travels to Europe to support his NBA journey.
The Iisalo household is undoubtedly lively, with three children.
However, balancing two demanding occupations and parenthood is difficult, especially since Tuomas’s new position requires frequent travel and unpredictable working hours.
Thus, the coach’s wife left a 10-year position as a doctor in Helsinki to be a housewife.
I have three kids, and my wife is a doctor. And they travel around Europe with me because I coach a children’s game to try to get the ball into the basket and prevent the other team. So I would hope I put everything I have into the job. This is how I approached it when I moved to Germany.
Well, we are not moving here because this is my home. I have to make sure that I put everything into this. This is my way. Kids are moving away from friends and relatives. My wife leaving a 10-year position in Helsinki to be a housewife. These are real sacrifices.
Their ability to maintain a stable family life while excelling in their respective fields is proof of their partnership.
Furthermore, every great coach has a support system, and Tuomas’s wife’s contributions cannot be overstated. While he focuses on leading the Grizzlies, she ensures their family remains grounded.
After all, NBA seasons are demanding, and having a doctor at home is always beneficial, so her medical knowledge can even be helpful!
While the NBA world watches Tuomas’s coaching journey, his wife’s story is one of quiet strength.
In a league where the spotlight rarely shifts away from the court, it’s worth acknowledging the families who make it all possible.
