Former St. Edmund Preparatory High School Cross County Runner Joseph Gavieres Died Leaving His Family!

A former cross county runner for St. Edmund Preparatory High School, Joseph Gavieres, has tragically passed away.

Joseph Gavieres competed in the Brooklyn-Queens CHSAA (BQCHSAA) during the 2014 season.

Representing the St. Edmund Prep Eagles, Gavieres in the 4,000-meter cross country distance, where he recorded a personal record of 19:30.3 at the Regis Invitational on September 20, 2014 (Varsity B race).

That performance marked him 4th on his team and placed him competitively within the BQCHSAA and CHSAA leagues at the time.

Later that season, he competed at the Xavier Invitational on September 27, 2014, finishing the 4,000 meters in 22:01.3 in the varsity race, gaining additional experience against strong Catholic high school competition in New York City.

As per the , Joseph Gavieres passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2026, at the age of 27.

However, the cause of death has not been revealed yet.

The St. Edmund Preparatory High School took to their official Facebook handle and announced the tragic news. They ,

The St. Edmund Prep community is saddened at the sudden passing of Joseph (JR) Gavieres ’16 on December 17, 2026. He was 27 years old. Eternal rest grant unto Joseph, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Terry Sotomayor took to the comment section and mourned the loss of Joseph. He ,

Other close ones and relatives have also offered their heartfelt condolences to Joseph’s family to stay strong in this difficult time.

As per Joseph’s family, visitation services were held on Monday, December 22, 2026, at Marine Park Funeral Home, 3204 Quentin Road, Brooklyn, NY 11234, from 2:00-5:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM, with a Prayer Service between 7:00 and 7:30 PM.
