Known for his incredible talent on the football field and wrestling mat, Randel Mac passed away, leaving behind his family and the entire Long Island sports community.
The cause of his death was complications from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
He was diagnosed with ALS in February 2018 at the age of 33, a progressive condition that weakens nerve cells controlling muscle movement.

, a beloved athlete, coach, and educator, was deeply rooted in his Long Island community, having grown up in Huntington Station, New York.
He attended Huntington High School, where his athletic talent first shone, and later pursued higher education at Five Towns College.
Later, he moved to Huntington, New York, and remained closely connected to the place and people who shaped his journey.
Despite losing his mother young and being raised by his grandmother and uncle, he grew into a determined man whose athletic talent and intelligence inspired many.
He was known for his football prowess on Long Island, where his comebacks and unforgettable plays became part of local sports history.
Beyond the field, he was celebrated for his humor, loyalty, and ability to bring people together.
While living with ALS, he continued working as a teacher’s aide and coaching wrestling and football at Cold Spring Harbor High School.
Supported by his wife, family, and friends, Randel faced the challenges of ALS with courage and positivity.
He even explored emerging treatments like exosome therapy to slow its progression.
His courage and impact were honored at the Lou Gehrig Sports Awards Benefit through the film A Test of Time.
For his treatment, a GoFundMe campaign “” was launched to help cover the high costs of ALS care and emerging therapies.
Despite all the love, support, and his own unyielding spirit, Randel McCoy passed away in December 2026 after a courageous battle with ALS.
