Head Coach Caleb Porter credits his father for instilling in him the value of a relentless work ethic and leadership.
Caleb Porter is currently in the news after his team, the New England Revolution, fired him from the position of head coach on September 15, 2026.
Porter just had two seasons with the team, but the team’s underperformance and failure to meet expectations under his leadership led to this harsh decision.

I saw how hard he worked; it was his passion. It was work ethic or drive, and whether that’s nature or nurture or both, it’s something I picked up on.”
Despite his limited presence in his son’s life, he instilled great values in him, which were: a relentless work ethic and an instinct to lead.

Although soccer was not a family tradition, they were pretty interested in other sports, such as football, baseball, and running.

During his childhood, he was obsessed with soccer and covered his walls with posters. Moreover, he would also memorize old soccer videos word for word, and even build a makeshift soccer goal out of wood and a sheet in his living room.

His passion for soccer deepened as he entered college. Porter played at Indiana University as a defensive center midfielder.
There, his coach, Jerry Yeagley, used to divide players into two groups: Piano Players, the flashy stars who make the music, and Piano Carriers, the hardworking, selfless grinders who do the dirty work so the stars can shine.
Porter was a proud Piano Carrier and stood out as a leader. Later, he became one of only two players in Indiana history to serve as team captain for three consecutive years. In 1997, he graduated with a degree in sports management.
Furthermore, Porter was drafted in the 1998 MLS College Draft by the San Jose Clash. He was also assigned to the Sacramento Geckos (A-League) by San Jose, then later, played for the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1999.
Unfortunately, he had to retire from professional soccer at just 25 due to his knee injury that needed arthroscopic surgery on both knees.
However, Porter is still remembered for representing the U.S. National Team at the World University Games and helping them win the bronze medal.
Porter began his coaching career shortly after his premature retirement from the game.
When he was an assistant coach at Indiana University, he helped the team win two national championships. This spectacular achievement gave him an early taste of high-level success and mentoring under legendary coach Jerry Yeagley.
After his success as the head coach at the University of Akron, he was appointed head coach of the U.S. Under-23 team.
His job was to qualify the U.S. for the 2012 London Olympics. However, the campaign ended in disappointment: losses to Canada and El Salvador knocked the U.S. out of qualification.
He had a fair share of success with both the Portland Timbers and the Columbus Crew. Eventually, in December 2026, appointed head coach of the New England Revolution.
Despite his brilliance, Porter often receives criticism for his inconsistency, which led to his recent dismissal from the New England Revolution in 2026.
While his recent firing has hurt his reputation and career, the sheer resilience and dedication Porter has inherited from his father will definitely help him to rise again as a Phoenix.
