Marshall Sellers, founder of the PAAVO Running System, passed away in October 2026, leaving behind a legacy of transformative coaching.
Marshall Sellers was a titan in the world of high school athletics, particularly in cross-country and track and field.
He began his coaching journey in Elkhart, Indiana, where he served as a teacher and coach from 1968 to 2013.
Marshall was the foundation of the PAAVO Running System, named after Finnish Olympic legend Paavo Nurmi.
His teams, notably at Elkhart Central High School, achieved remarkable success, including winning the 1973 Indiana boys’ cross-country state title.

Born in 1945, Marshall Sellers was raised on a dairy farm near Coldwater, Michigan.
He pursued higher education at Western Michigan University and Indiana University, later settling into a career that blended teaching with coaching.
Sellers was deeply devoted to his family, often crediting his parents, Harold and Vesta, and his brother Graham for instilling the principles that guided his life.
The loss of Marshall Sellers has left a profound void in the community.
His passing was deeply felt by generations of students, athletes, and fellow educators, who saw him not just as a coach but also as a mentor and friend.
Sellers’ teammates and students still remember his impact on the community, and most recall his teachings.
One of his sayings, which was even shared in 2017 by the South Bend Tribune, says;
“Teaching is the heart of living. It’s about doing something you’ve never done or didn’t want to do. It’s about testing character.”
While his death has deeply affected many, his admirers are paying tribute to his life by sharing his notable work and experiences on social media.
