Jeff Van Gundy’s father, Bill Van Gundy, is the former head coach at SUNY Brockport and at Genesee Community College.
Jeff Van Gundy’s from ESPN’s NBA broadcasts has left a significant void, particularly during the playoffs’ intense moments.
His chemistry with play-by-play announcer Mike Green was a hallmark of some of the best NBA coverage.
Since his dismissal two years ago, ESPN has struggled to find a stable replacement, moving through analysts like Doc Rivers, JJ Redick, and Richard Jefferson.

Jeff Van Gundy’s Parents Supported Him To Become A Basketball Coach
Born on January 19, 1962, Jeff Van Gundy, 64, was raised by his parents, Bill and Cindy Van Gundy in in Hemet, California.
Later, his parents moved to Brockport, New York, while Jeff was still in high school.
His father, Bill, his B.A., M.A., and Ed.D. degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles.
He served as the basketball coach at SUNY Brockport and at Genesee Community College.
At Genesee Community College, he had over 300 career wins with the men’s basketball team throughout the mid-eighties and nineties.

In 1988, he was the National Association of Basketball Coaches Merit Award.
He was inducted into the New York State Basketball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in 2002.
Jeff followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a career as a basketball coach and commentator.
On the other hand, Jeff’s mother, Cindy, has stayed away from the media spotlight, so little information about her personal life is known.
However, she has always supported Jeff in achieving his dream of becoming a basketball coach and commentator.

Jeff Van Gundy grew up playing basketball with his elder brother, Stan Van Gundy, 66, born on August 26, 1959.
Stan is also an American former basketball coach who is a television commentator for NBA on TNT and College Basketball on CBS.
Before TNT, he was most for the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA.
On May 14, 2014, he was hired as the head coach and president of basketball operations of the Detroit Pistons.
Stan was married to Kim, with whom he shared four children. Sadly, their married life ended after 25 years following the of Kim in August 2026.
During a podcast, Stan revealed that Kim died by suicide.
