A youth baseball game at the Crisp County Youth Ball Complex turned chaotic on September 6, 2026, when a disagreement over an umpire’s call led to a physical altercation involving a coach and a spectator.
The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) two men from Americus, Georgia, were arrested in connection with the incident.
According to Sheriff Billy Hancock, the conflict arose after a referee made a judgment call with which the coach strongly disagreed.
The disagreement quickly escalated into physical contact between the coach and the umpire. Witnesses say a spectator from the stands then rushed onto the field, intensifying the fight.
Sheriff Hancock stressed the importance of parents and spectators acting as role models and maintaining a safe, respectful environment during youth sporting events and said:
“These are kids who are playing. We’re here to reach them a lesson. Some calls will go in your favor; some calls will go against you. But there is no reason for any call on this field to escalate into a physical fight in front of our youth.”
Furthermore, the two individuals arrested in connection with the altercation were Joshua Drew, 42, charged with Simple Assault, and John Taylor, 37, charged with Battery and Simple Assault.
Both men are residents of Americus, GA.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and additional charges could be filed depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
This incident underscores the importance of maintaining safe and educational youth sports environments, emphasizing sportsmanship and respect for referees, coaches, and players alike.
